Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
