New research reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
