All Fans Are Welcome to Become the Fourth Haim Bandmate.

"When are you chatting with the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of famous admirers have openly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
